How do you break into a house? (For a fiction story)?

Why not have it that they've observed the owner leaving the key on an antique credenza next to the door and it's a simple job of them using a kids fishing net on a stick pushed through the letter box and with the help of another one they slide it in to the net and just open the door with the key so that there's isn't even any obvious sign of a break in.You would have to deal with the possibility of there being an alarm that would have to be disabled.
