What is West Hollywood like?

Is it hard to get around in? Is it safe? Do they have available, affordable (by LA standards) rentals or is it hard to find a place? What about public transport and is it bike and walking friendly? What kind of jobs are to be found? I am about to finish my MA in Communication Art & Design and want to work in the media. I've been looking at places to move to as I hate the dead-end hillbilly bible belt hellhole I currently live in.
